Canova: the classical ideal art
between sculpture and painting
Canova is definitely the greatest European sculptor of
the Neoclassical period, considered the last Italian
artist who aroused interest at international level,
thanks to his ability to synthesise and complete the
great Italian sculpture tradition and interpret
contemporary aspirations towards the ideal beauty and
the rebirth of ancient art.
A sculptor worth knowing a lot more in depth. For
this reason it is proper to point out the exhibition:
“Canova. The classical ideal art between sculpture and
painting” (from 25th January to 21st June 2009) at the
San Domenico Museums in Forlì.
The event, featuring 160 works, is intended to propose
for the first time the most famous sculptures of the
“modern Fidia”, marble and plaster statues, but also
sketches and drawings, side by side in comparison with
the ancient models and even with paintings by
contemporary artists.
Indeed, the artist celebrated by the contemporary world
as the “greatest sculptor of all times” did not only
bring back the perfection of the Greek marble
sculptures, but he was able to announce romanticism in
the sensitivity of bodies full of sensuality and able to
unite beauty and passion, grace and balance like no
other sculptor after Bernini had been able to do.
